Industrial make
Manganese can achieve industrial production, and almost all manganese is used in the steel industry to manufacture manganese iron alloys. In a blast furnace, manganese iron alloy can be obtained by reducing an appropriate proportion of iron oxide (Fe ₂ O3) and manganese dioxide (MnO ₂) with carbon (graphite). Pure manganese metal can be produced by electrolyzing manganese sulfate (MnSO ₄).
In industry, manganese metal can be made by electrolyzing manganese sulfate solution with direct current. This method has a high cost, but the purity of the finished product is good.
The preparation solution uses manganese ore powder and inorganic acid to react and heat to produce manganese salt solution. At the same time, ammonium salt is added to the solution as a buffering agent. Iron is removed by adding an oxidizing agent for oxidation and neutralization, heavy metals are removed by adding a sulfurizing purification agent, and then filtered and separated. Electrolytic additives are added to the solution as electrolytic solution. The sulfuric acid leaching method is widely used in industrial production to produce electrolytes, and the method of electrolyzing manganese metal with manganese chloride salt solution has not yet formed a large-scale production.
Laboratory make
Laboratory make can use the pyrometallurgical method to produce metallic manganese, while pyrometallurgical methods include silicon reduction (electric silicon thermal method) and aluminum reduction (aluminum thermal method).
